Do I have to give a "father of the bride" speech ?
May 11, 2010
My daughter is getting married in December. We have not been in each others lives for the last 12 years, except for a few visits.
She has asked me to attend her wedding and walk her down the aisle.
I want to do this, but I am not up to standing before 50-75 people that I don’t know and give a "father of the bride" speech. I am 67 years old and I have’nt given a speech that I can remember. I am Very nervous about being called on. What do you think I should do prior to the wedding day, so I won’t be an embarrassment to myself and my daughter. ?
If i was to get married I would be very glad that my dad is beside me and walk me down the aisle..i wouldn’t care about no speeches. i just want his blessings that’s all.
don’t worry…

I don’t think anyone is forced to give speeches at a wedding. If you are put on the spot, then just keep it short and simple, like "I feel honored to be giving my daughter away on her special day. Best wishes for ______ and _______" It would make your daughter very happy if you said something. Two short sentences won’t kill you and would prevent your daughter’s feelings getting hurt.

BE FRANK WITH YOUR DAUGHTER. TELL HER HOW FLATTERED YOU ARE TO BE ASKED TO WALK HER DOWN THE AISLE AND ASK IF YOU CAN GIVE THE FIRST TOAST TO THE HAPPY COUPLE RATHER THAN A SPEECH. USUALLY THE BEST MAN GIVES THE FIRST TOAST BUT HE COULD MAKE A CONGRATULATORY SPEECH INSTEAD SINCE HE PROBABLY KNOWS THE COUPLE MUCH BETTER THAN YOU. EVEN IF YOU HAVE TO GIVE A SPEECH IT CAN BE VERY SHORT AND YOU CAN TALK ABOUT HOW YOU FELT WHEN SHE WAS BORN AND HOW PROUD YOU ARE OF THE WOMAN SHE IS GROWING UP TO BE. THAT SHOULD BE ENOUGH FOR EVERYONE. SORRY FOR CAPS I AM NOT SHOUTING AT YOU,

Call your daughter up now. Ask her if she wants you to make a speech. (It is quite alright to ask what she expects of you). If she says "yes", then you have the next few weeks to write, and perfect the speech you want to make. If she says "no" then you are off the hook!
Good luck!

It is not required. Most weddings do not have speeches by the father of the bride. If you want to give one, then do so but don’t worry about it.
