How long is too long for wedding speeches to go on for IN TOTAL before people get restless? The speeches will be AFTER the main course (before dessert) so people WON’T be hungry.

My fiance and I have a few people who we want to say a formal speech on top of the usual. The speakers will be (not in this order):

– Father of Bride
– Father of Groom
– Bride (I really want to speak! lol)
– Groom
– Best Man
– Groomsman (not traditional… but fiance really wants this)
– Maid Of Honor
– Brides Brother (important to me for various reasons)
– Maybe Bridesmaid so she doesn’t feel left out!?!?

I know it’s a long list… but each one is important to my fiance and/or me. What do you think? What time limit should each speech have to make this acceptable and not boring? (All of the boys are naturally pretty funny which should help at least. And the MC will be funny too)

Sorry….but that is WAY too many speeches. But if you must….make sure they keep it to no longer than 3 minutes EACH, and break them up…Traditional speech/toast by the Best Man and MOH, then eat….Then a few more speeches, then first dances, then finish out the speeches.

I’m planning a wedding and it is expected that we throw a dance for our guests. I know it used to be custom for the bride and groom to leave after all the ceremonial stuff has been done (Dinner, speeches, first dance, father daughter dance, cake cut, garter/bouquet toss etc) and the guests would stay and enjoy the party.

I want to stay and get to say hi to everyone but I don’t like parties, I have no interest in drinking and dancing and neither does my fiancé, I’d much rather leave and spend time alone with my new husband.

How do I go about leaving, I don’t want to just disappear, I’d like to say goodbye to our guests and have them see us off?

We are planning to stay for a few hours, nothing rushed, we just don’t want to stay till the early hours of the morning and be too tired to enjoy the evening when we’re alone. We’ve hired a wedding planner so I’m hoping we won’t be too tired to enjoy the wedding night, but even if we’re too tired I’d rather have that time alone with him.

We are a Christian couple and this will be the first time we’ve "been together" fully so I don’t really want to waste time at a party we’re not that interested in and then be too tired when its over.

The bride and groom go change into travel clothes, the bride has a corsage given to her by the groom. They walk thru the crowd, say quick farewells, are escorted to their car by the crowd, and drive off. The party continues without them. Somebody has usually decorated the car with shoes or cans for luck.
In the old days, a group of guests would have escorted the couple to the train station, the airport, or even the ship or boat if they happened to live in a city with a dock. Wherever the take off point for the honeymoon was, if they were leaving during the reception, that was where some of the guests went..
The way you want to just stay a few hours and go, well that is the way it used to be by the old etiquette rules.. The bride and groom used to be expected to leave early, in fact, it was considered rude of a guest to leave before the bride and groom left. Now the trend is for the couple to stay until the end, and get as drunk as they can. Well, they probably do not need a wedding night, they have probably been having those every night for years.
You just disappear, come back in your leaving on the honeymoon clothes, announce that the bride and groom will be leaving for the honeymoon now. This used to be when the bride throws her bouquet. Walk to your car, let the crowd gather to wave you away, and go. And yes, you should have spoken to every guest while you were at the reception.

I have been having a look at who makes speeches etc. and my first question is –

what order are these speeches made in – father of the bride, Best Man, Groom and Maid of Honor? As everywhere I look tells me something different – and also is this too many?

Secondly – My MoH has just announced that she WON’T be making a speech, would it be ok for my gorgeous (then will be 9 years old) neice to say something?

Finally – Hen Nights – without strippers, and just having a big night out, is it ok for my 2 best male mates to come? They really want to, its sweet!

it’s totally up to you who makes a toast, and when. I’ve been to over 20 weddings and there’s no rhyme or reason as to who speaks in what order, but the toasts are always given before dinner is served. usually the parents don’t speak, just the MOH and best man. but yes it would be very cute if your neice wants to say something. also yes your male friends can come to your bachelorette, it’s your bachelorette and you can invite the pope if you darn well please.
