Many of the guests would be his friends. In the UK you would have an opening speech from the Father of the Bride who would end by toasting the bride and groom then the groom would respond on behalf of his wife and him. He would end the speech with a toast thanking the bridesmaids. Also during his speech any gifts for the bridesmaids, best man, ushers and mothers would be given to thank them. This would be followed by the Best man speaking on behalf of the bridesmaids, he again would finish with a toast to the bride and groom. No one else would traditionally speak.
